Her sisters and she will be decked out in style! The two older sisters have matching skirts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/9197565146/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Dr. Seuss ruffle skirt by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Dr. Seuss ruffle skirt" height="333" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7449/9197565146_e9bedd6946.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This is the birthday girl's dress. It's basically a pillowcase dress with fabric band at the top tied in a bow, and a ruffle along the bottom. The diaper cover matches the blue bow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/9197565044/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Dr. Seuss pillowcase dress and diaper cover by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Dr. Seuss pillowcase dress and diaper cover" height="500" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5511/9197565044_ab27d33a75.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The fabric was chosen by her mom.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbi7RNdD56XjuB3Dk262XBYiJTIrRHA8dCj7RADTdy4KAGsjC8jj0DXICFBI5qVAQGvhWSQ8IaWayXUAW5c536WC13kE3iTy5oKeeffpBzC9cB-M_Gbaz6o-hZhqyH3hb7OiX3vG3y6s9e/s1600/IMG_9978.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbi7RNdD56XjuB3Dk262XBYiJTIrRHA8dCj7RADTdy4KAGsjC8jj0DXICFBI5qVAQGvhWSQ8IaWayXUAW5c536WC13kE3iTy5oKeeffpBzC9cB-M_Gbaz6o-hZhqyH3hb7OiX3vG3y6s9e/s320/IMG_9978.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKWYk615f1WdV6AcV0da-RYI-jJLp7OKX4g3b5rfFcaeTbQxdbQPAssOgrL2XH78LVmPwm0PCoXw69BtKnnQmtV1Xj9m19MnZADKcaAYNLYz5DEVnIk0pzAaJeP-QtOnTtY-dAaAc9YQfZ/s1600/IMG_9979.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKWYk615f1WdV6AcV0da-RYI-jJLp7OKX4g3b5rfFcaeTbQxdbQPAssOgrL2XH78LVmPwm0PCoXw69BtKnnQmtV1Xj9m19MnZADKcaAYNLYz5DEVnIk0pzAaJeP-QtOnTtY-dAaAc9YQfZ/s320/IMG_9979.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The older sisters' skirts are a mathematical feat. I used a red and white chevron for the underskirt, added three layers of ruffles, and a layer of red tulle. The top layer has a red ribbon on top. Each of the three fabric ruffle layers were pieced together from a variety of Dr. Seuss fabrics.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_FKtjk328_-mm6nU6ZahM604mSv8cSrF6fMVUgKGd6jVCoc7Mqy5Csp6JsbPjEjFFeSDQxFvzXWE7_UiIu0yOCvgkka8e57uYSo3rMLK_uAOOAfGixd5Hd-TuPIZ1Pooj-dvr9P0x2VVF/s1600/IMG_9982.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_FKtjk328_-mm6nU6ZahM604mSv8cSrF6fMVUgKGd6jVCoc7Mqy5Csp6JsbPjEjFFeSDQxFvzXWE7_UiIu0yOCvgkka8e57uYSo3rMLK_uAOOAfGixd5Hd-TuPIZ1Pooj-dvr9P0x2VVF/s320/IMG_9982.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The bottoms of each ruffle layer were serged with a narrow rolled hem on the bottom and just a regular 4-thread stitch at the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCDnaGg9EqKsOqXnHFAhu6o1GJ7LTajrApO2xW_gdun28D-FDFcvAG8191U95-uBdewDAfC-DFkJBXNt4WLN_n3ZsQNKWVP9lSqCBvJYRGwnBPWfkJmKqJ9mf2KO6qw5VIrY3BmMZw61Oe/s1600/IMG_9983.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCDnaGg9EqKsOqXnHFAhu6o1GJ7LTajrApO2xW_gdun28D-FDFcvAG8191U95-uBdewDAfC-DFkJBXNt4WLN_n3ZsQNKWVP9lSqCBvJYRGwnBPWfkJmKqJ9mf2KO6qw5VIrY3BmMZw61Oe/s320/IMG_9983.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The lines were marked on the skirt after the tube was made, and before I put the elastic in the top. That made it easy to attach the gathered tulle and fabric ruffle layers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-h-9WgmlsE64wfJnGtiaqzu2TjfJTenyxkc1RWMwlE5xOJLxKRs0mLJpHBQTCs1VqyWQnZxgiXQPeC634Z8EHDhjWjU_rm787NAj6_lUqRY-UkAhxdOxTb6bTI1rxaxnn8nD9n4v8o44-/s1600/IMG_9984.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-h-9WgmlsE64wfJnGtiaqzu2TjfJTenyxkc1RWMwlE5xOJLxKRs0mLJpHBQTCs1VqyWQnZxgiXQPeC634Z8EHDhjWjU_rm787NAj6_lUqRY-UkAhxdOxTb6bTI1rxaxnn8nD9n4v8o44-/s320/IMG_9984.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I started at the bottom and added layers as I went up. Because all the edges were serged, I didn't have to worry about a lot of loose threads or frayed edges.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho7MoIeAq8D6j_vt1o9z7Ymf_eyeRDsOb6WSs-U10io7rPSa0do7MJhlpxm2GvmocH92e6ySjPIX8EEnq2IWsMas4f93ni0CaV9kV6f1N0ZsyF2UG7v8daJIFf-0dnGPTLvoNQ5mHg7A5w/s1600/IMG_9985.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho7MoIeAq8D6j_vt1o9z7Ymf_eyeRDsOb6WSs-U10io7rPSa0do7MJhlpxm2GvmocH92e6ySjPIX8EEnq2IWsMas4f93ni0CaV9kV6f1N0ZsyF2UG7v8daJIFf-0dnGPTLvoNQ5mHg7A5w/s320/IMG_9985.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>

However, there are 6 girls cousins and only my two boys - so the Very Hungry Caterpillar and butterfly had to make an appearance too!<br />
<br />
The goody bags were from the Target dollar section... a long time ago.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixIXCPYfIuIYHANH9kqSKSPDjAGMVrXKkAn1iSzLN47-YrB3V_hzSgW-_Rs1JOFN0h1g5ur5bTS9a25zb4W1f0AxOvrouhs5-ayZCy9KfY4adk0KO13-2bbTrCU8U2LYk8n8wn_mookbZq/s1600/IMG_0005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixIXCPYfIuIYHANH9kqSKSPDjAGMVrXKkAn1iSzLN47-YrB3V_hzSgW-_Rs1JOFN0h1g5ur5bTS9a25zb4W1f0AxOvrouhs5-ayZCy9KfY4adk0KO13-2bbTrCU8U2LYk8n8wn_mookbZq/s320/IMG_0005.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Each kid got parts to make a mobile. The circles had each of the bugs from Eric Carle's books, as well as the star from "Draw Me a Star". I used my Silhouette to layout the pictures and cut them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The treats were runts and gummy worms...<br />

<br />
Some other goodies in their bags - fork and spoon (Target dollar section), glow sticks, sparklers, bug jar, bug rings for the girls, and bug finger puppets.<br />

The finger puppets, jar, and rings were from Oriental Trading Company.<br />

The three babies got socks.<br />

<br />
We also made fireflies, using Mountain Dew bottles, glow sticks, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, and foam wings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used glue dots for the eyes and double stick tape to hold the wings on.<br />

Since we planned on a picnic, I used some of my stickers on rocks to be decoration for outside as well as napkin holders if it was breezy.<br />

<br />
The invites were simple. Green dotted washi tape (Target), a picture of the birthday boy in the grass, and some star and bug stickers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimLRlqEHhqV8sroZ3f2K5quo7WQBFa3Kc1A8UoowYUi_zu5kgNV2cnjtsOutwcNg3mXyEfZURaXTIgpCaG6XWS5G7K-J7cgMxncZEHohb8WC4GkBxp3pif8eY0w2ojjoGMHwVun4BW4Y7S/s1600/IMG_9587.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimLRlqEHhqV8sroZ3f2K5quo7WQBFa3Kc1A8UoowYUi_zu5kgNV2cnjtsOutwcNg3mXyEfZURaXTIgpCaG6XWS5G7K-J7cgMxncZEHohb8WC4GkBxp3pif8eY0w2ojjoGMHwVun4BW4Y7S/s320/IMG_9587.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The insides were made with washi tape, stickers, and a computer printout.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAMuNhjllPJRlGxhMkHi4fezsf-E4-4uZnhfWpn_UU17gObWH9KHZlTCta2ZxyGBW3EIMPowA1uXJ-HZjFvPaO37v5-NMM9WuFEE_dkYHUAu5ZYoJAl_ldy1VDX564CtxE27m3ndUiEKQ3/s1600/IMG_9588.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAMuNhjllPJRlGxhMkHi4fezsf-E4-4uZnhfWpn_UU17gObWH9KHZlTCta2ZxyGBW3EIMPowA1uXJ-HZjFvPaO37v5-NMM9WuFEE_dkYHUAu5ZYoJAl_ldy1VDX564CtxE27m3ndUiEKQ3/s320/IMG_9588.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The weather was rainy, so the picnic food was served inside. The cake was a five layer yellow cake with dark blue frosting. It was covered in gold stars, and a yellow star candle, and a little yellow paper bunting spelling out Braden's name.<br />
<br />
The birthday boy, his siblings, and cousins had a blast playing together anyway, and the grandparents, aunts and uncle enjoyed time with the kids. That's what really matters!Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15656774624409376051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3318830286307424759.post-28685593311443365652013-06-28T06:00:00.000-05:002013-07-04T15:02:57.007-05:00my firefly is one!My firefly is one! For his birthday outfit I used Patty Young's <a href="http://modkidboutique.com/NatalieandNate.html">Natalie&Nate</a> pattern, the boy version. The fabric is from Eric Carle's Very Lonely Firefly collection. The lining fabric is Brown Bear or Very Hungry Caterpillar - I forgot which one.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/9197564830/" title="Very Lonely Firefly Romper by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Very Lonely Firefly Romper" height="333" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3686/9197564830_98ca24ce8b.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
I also embellished a romper for him with a firefly star. We now have five people in our family - so a star seems just right as our family symbol. His older brother requested a matching tshirt, so he got an orange one with the star appliqued in the middle as well.<br />

<br />
I finally cut into my Eric Carle stash. The headscarf and bodice are from the Brown Bear collection. The skirt, pockets, ruffle, and sleeves are from the Very Hungry Caterpillar collection.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

She wore it proudly for her brother's Eric Carle birthday party, and will hopefully wear it for the first day of Kindergarten.<br />

I had so much fun with them I went ahead and bought the pattern so I can add a few more details and learn some of her tricks.<br />

It's a great concept, and although I've only used it once - I plan to use it again for another special project. I bought <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1455269">this</a> rainbow fabric in the organic knit and used Patty Young's <a href="http://modkidboutique.com/Morgan.html">Morgan</a> pattern.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748765183/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Morgan rainbow by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Morgan rainbow" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8122/8748765183_9f1a2b1b3e.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I used an old tshirt for the yellow, and some scrap knits for the green and the turquoise. I cut the fabric carefully to get a nice zigzag effect at the shoulder and neckbands.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQIRq9uke96qJGoQgNrB2TmLFIJkt8tyP-vHRI7kclx2rGJEUwoGBxkCvb4qtXeiKRNN-4oN1jGatqZb8Qi8s-49RjcAgr22Qyluy52AcYMNzqoj-8iyfkd6QZtDroDqYewn8BrMqozJ6l/s1600/IMG_9563.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQIRq9uke96qJGoQgNrB2TmLFIJkt8tyP-vHRI7kclx2rGJEUwoGBxkCvb4qtXeiKRNN-4oN1jGatqZb8Qi8s-49RjcAgr22Qyluy52AcYMNzqoj-8iyfkd6QZtDroDqYewn8BrMqozJ6l/s320/IMG_9563.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>

This version was made for one of my nieces using Patty Young fabric and some other solids from my stash.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here's another peek at the pocket.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The tuck at the neckline is a cute detail.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I've made many of Patty Young's <a href="http://modkidboutique.com/Abigail.html">Abigail</a> dresses before. This is my latest version.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
It comes together so easily now, especially with my serger. Easy breezy!<br />

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748765293/" title="Noodlehead 241 - pink by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Noodlehead 241 - pink" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8401/8748765293_24c811e386.jpg" width="333" /></a><br />
<br />
My son's teacher loves pink, so I wanted to give her something she'd like without going over the bubble-gum top!<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748783121/" title="Pink pouch by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Pink pouch" height="333" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8271/8748783121_7b3e2ab6c8.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
One of my daughter's teachers loves flowers in her yard, and the color red.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748765245/" title="Noodlehead 241 - red floral by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Noodlehead 241 - red floral" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8403/8748765245_3b62c2429a.jpg" width="333" /></a><br />
<br />
The polka dots on the red are actually kind of a shiny silver.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748783155/" title="red floral pouch by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="red floral pouch" height="333" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8270/8748783155_e49e7eacff.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
Her other teacher loves purple - so she got a purple/silver dot & floral mix.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748765225/" title="Noodlehead 241 - purple floral by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Noodlehead 241 - purple floral" height="500" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7366/8748765225_da8d0fe43d.jpg" width="333" /></a><br />
<br />
It was fun mixing and matching different fabrics. I've made a few clutches before, so they came together pretty easily. The 241 tote has a lot more steps and pieces, but is still pretty easy to put together. I haven't tried it yet with the inset pocket. I'm saving that project for another day!<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748783185/" title="purple floral pouch by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="purple floral pouch" height="333" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8129/8748783185_27f0bd2c82.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />

<br />
I thought the print was a perfect one to use with this dress that already called for a five-petal flower applique.<br />

R gets a little bit larger quilt, mostly because I didn't bother with really counting stuff out until it was already cut. When I realized how big it would be, I just went for it because I had everything already. The pattern is Patty Young's <a href="http://modkidboutique.com/Houndstooth.html">Houndstooth</a> quilt.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748765109/" title="Houndstooth Rainbow by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Houndstooth Rainbow" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8560/8748765109_b974ac2d19.jpg" width="378" /></a><br />
<br />
In each of the gray pinwheels, I free motion stitched a heart with an R inside of it. In the corner, I signed my name. Otherwise, all quilting is stitch in the ditch around the pinwheels.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxUoSkczO4jLfJTgxIzc-qZKDLup_nI2Rj6ah_3m7rjrwuPpuygoyS1Q_9IpY6605D95xLaBEXTIV30FHF6QHZ8Hv27hlYXvfhoGiAkxMM8o2To0v0uPnW2kruGlHV0lhiI37w2Yp_sF-z/s1600/IMG_9466.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxUoSkczO4jLfJTgxIzc-qZKDLup_nI2Rj6ah_3m7rjrwuPpuygoyS1Q_9IpY6605D95xLaBEXTIV30FHF6QHZ8Hv27hlYXvfhoGiAkxMM8o2To0v0uPnW2kruGlHV0lhiI37w2Yp_sF-z/s320/IMG_9466.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The pictures don't do it justice. It is a beautiful, bright colorful
quilt. I used a dark gray for the binding, and bright "firework" print
for the pinwheels that aren't as solid.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8748746857/" title="Heart these dresses by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Heart these dresses" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8120/8748746857_24dfd5f822.jpg" width="333" /></a><br />
<br />
I used a black and white polka dot Michael Miller knit, and did the strap and heart applique using an old pink tshirt. The doll version doesn't have the bow at the shoulder and is a little more of the typical tank pattern.<br />

Luckily, she has a great brother who will do just about anything for his sister. We wanted him to have something special to remember the day too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVtM-uhUBpOHbK3zbINp18VhACG1vx2XYUAJDg1z5J6fRb8IBZwqCGOJO8qV0EnU1qunxPu7l97lFb7LY6BLMV6kN-mIAjaIMJGzeDojPpjadgCs4EhjicSNVW2GnhaBeDNNuUEZCkmSFp/s1600/IMG_9392.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVtM-uhUBpOHbK3zbINp18VhACG1vx2XYUAJDg1z5J6fRb8IBZwqCGOJO8qV0EnU1qunxPu7l97lFb7LY6BLMV6kN-mIAjaIMJGzeDojPpjadgCs4EhjicSNVW2GnhaBeDNNuUEZCkmSFp/s320/IMG_9392.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I used a pre-made ringer tee, added my own Silhouette cut vinyl from a font I found online, and made this shirt for my American Girl's big brother.<br />

For her, I used Patty Young's <a href="http://modkidboutique.com/Claudia.html">Claudia</a> pattern. For the doll, I used her <a href="http://modkidboutique.com/MiniAddison.html">Mini-Addison</a> pattern as a base, and modified the bodice and sleeves and didn't add the sash or overskirt. The doll dress didn't have a collar either. They each had light blue dresses, white cloud sleeves, and rainbow ribbons along the skirt.<br />

This is an embroidery patch I did for her on the back. It is about an 8" circle.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I love the turquoise and blue squares the best!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl9Ctjzbct2soKTfjhExkLjXpYmCSosjKMX4H6avFu_Ygnxw6OTI4kg0ss67c84LexXkoME0X-nBlg2U_mWOWA0TTYvGCrBdY52cxYNfgAsvygq2Wd-vhXMnIRD2r-w282IHTVQm9xjq8b/s1600/IMG_9353.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl9Ctjzbct2soKTfjhExkLjXpYmCSosjKMX4H6avFu_Ygnxw6OTI4kg0ss67c84LexXkoME0X-nBlg2U_mWOWA0TTYvGCrBdY52cxYNfgAsvygq2Wd-vhXMnIRD2r-w282IHTVQm9xjq8b/s320/IMG_9353.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Each colored block has a heart with swirls inside. Between each colored block you can see the free motion squiggles. It took a long time, but I love how it kind of helps transition from one color to the next in the rainbow, and makes the white not such a solid.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I found that the doll dress bodice lined up a little differently than the kid's version, so the buttons look off center in this picture. I think that was my fault and I ironed the fold in the wrong direction.<br />

Abby's "big girl" room is rainbow themed, and I'm finally getting going on the quilt. Each block is pieced with scrap fabrics, some small squares and some large. Once the quilt is finished, I'll do some more close-ups. I took this picture so I could use my iPad & Adobe Ideas app to plan the quilting pattern.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428006895/" title="The rainbow quilt by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="The rainbow quilt" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8517/8428006895_1246a44dcb.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
<br />
After I sketched it out, I got busy using my new toy. This is the free motion grip (and extension table hidden underneath the quilt) for my Brother Quattro. It is great because I don't feel like I have to use my quilting gloves anymore. There seems to be some pull on the fabric, but as long as I'm aware of it, I can keep it in check and glide right along. I love it!<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428006419/" title="Get ready... go by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Get ready... go" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8372/8428006419_64747d0caa.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
I decided to do some free motion quilting on each of the white sashing pieces. I am using colored thread by each of the colored rows, adding to the coloring and making the white not quite so bright. On each of the tall vertical pieces, I'm also including my daughter's name somewhere in the maze of squiggles. I think that will be fun for her to find! This is quite time consuming, but I love how it looks so far.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428007321/" title="Squiggly wiggly quilting by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Squiggly wiggly quilting" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8054/8428007321_13d7611248.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
I have some more squiggling to do, then I will be quilting the borders & doing the binding. The borders will not be quite as busy. The backing looks like a cloud, and I will be doing the binding in some rainbow striped fabric. Her birthday is in early April and I WILL have it done by then!!Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15656774624409376051noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3318830286307424759.post-13373127195906311472013-02-02T06:00:00.000-06:002013-02-05T21:13:16.397-06:00Calvin & Hobbes party<br />
<br />
A Calvin and Hobbes party with a snowman twist...perfect for my eight year old!<br />
<br />
<br />
The friend party invitations were a simple orange card, with a hand colored (by my son) Hobbes glued on the front.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8429097664/" title="The Calvin & Hobbes invite - friend - outside by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="The Calvin & Hobbes invite - friend - outside" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8213/8429097664_3eb719d4cf.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
Inside were the party details(my identifying info is blurred out), complete with a gleeful Calvin enjoying a sled ride! <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428005993/" title="The Calvin & Hobbes invite - friend - inside by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="The Calvin & Hobbes invite - friend - inside" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8512/8428005993_c5014824cc.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
The family party invitations showed the family enjoying a special meal together. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428004751/" title="The Calvin & Hobbes invite - family - outside by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="The Calvin & Hobbes invite - family - outside" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8097/8428004751_6df5ec852f.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Inside were the details for the family and the Calvin & Hobbes "party" shot.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428004285/" title="The Calvin & Hobbes invite - family - inside by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="The Calvin & Hobbes invite - family - inside" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8372/8428004285_b70abcb453.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
On the party day, everyone was greeted at the door by Calvin's club sign - hand drawn by my son.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8445743795/" title="Calvin's club sign by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Calvin's club sign" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8472/8445743795_bcc29bdfe1.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
I made a banner for above the fireplace. Using a Calvin&Hobbes font, I printed my son's name in large orange letters, cut them out, and glued them to photocopied pages from the comic books. I used the page of Calvin & Hobbes dancing to music. The pages were cut in a pennant shape and then glued onto thin rope.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8446830078/" title="Party banner by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Party banner" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8364/8446830078_edf3b32413.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
We used Styrofoam balls to make some of the famous snowmen. Puffy paint was the black buttons and eyes, the noses were made with Model Magic. The blue car is my daughter's Olivia car.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8445744555/" title="More of the crazy snowmen by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="More of the crazy snowmen" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8371/8445744555_a7f711b21f.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
These snowmen were by the front door. Sled was made out of Legos by my son. The M&Ms were the hit of the party - especially for my daughter and nieces who were found in the closet holding handfuls. Little sneaks!<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8445743449/" title="Calvin's crazy snowmen by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Calvin's crazy snowmen" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8048/8445743449_3bbfbb53ed.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Conner made a poster with photocopies of some of his favorite comic strips. He did his best to replicate the font when he wrote the title on the top.<br />

<br />
I made the goody bags out of tiger fabric, labels from the comic book strip, and twist tied them shut with pipe cleaners. Each bag had a bag of "Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs" (Cocoa Puffs), an orange gumball, a Calvinball mask (cut out of black fleece) and a colorful bouncy ball. <br />

<br />
We weren't sure if it was going to snow, so we had to have a back up plan. We had a good amount of snow outside for the boys to play in, but Conner still wanted to make the mess inside. You can see we made newspaper hats for the boys, and then they made snowman jars. They used tiger felt for scarves, glued on noses made from Model Magic, glued on eyes from buttons, and used pipe cleaners for hair, tails, arms, or whatever else they could think of. The snow mess that went in the jar is shaving cream, cornstarch, and glitter. Thank you <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/186336503304802647/">Pinterest</a>. The boys said it was a little itchy, probably because of the glitter. I think it was really cool stuff. When they were done mixing it in disposable bowls, they put it in the jars, washed their hands off, and went outside to play in the real snow. That gave me time to clean up the table for treats!!<br />

Here's a closeup of the snowman jar parts.<br />

<br />
We also had a little photo booth set up for the boys. My husband turned the TV and made it like a monitor so they could see themselves. PERFECT activity for the boys to start off the party. We then watched all the pictures at the end of the party while they were having their treats.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8445742271/" title="Photo booth by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Photo booth" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8238/8445742271_e548d409eb.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
After playing in the snow, they came in to have hot chocolate and cookies. I made melted snowman cookies and can not find the picture anywhere. I'll add it later if I find it. For now - check out the inspiration on <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/186336503304788735/">Pinterest</a>. Mine didn't have scarves, and the noses were orange TicTacs. I also had chocolate chip, butterscotch chip, white chocolate chip, and triple chocolate chip cookies. We also made "tiger tails" using pretzel rods drizzled with melted orange and brown chocolate.<br />

<br />
The boys had a blast, and would definitely have enjoyed more time playing outside in the snow. It's our first significant snowfall of the season so they were eager to play! One of my favorite parts is that Conner was old enough to really help out with some of the details, and had definite ideas about how some of the activities should be set up. Most of all, he had fun. Happy birthday, Conner!Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15656774624409376051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3318830286307424759.post-63616362660451904872013-01-22T06:00:00.000-06:002013-02-08T14:29:18.541-06:00pleats & shoesThe littlest niece I have is just 7 months old. Her sisters were the ones who got the "Piper" <a href="http://bethethread.blogspot.com/2013/02/piper-three-ways.html">dresses</a> for Christmas, so I picked out a pleated skirt pattern for her from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/62411115/girls-cheer-skirt-tutorial-pleated-skirt?">Little Lizard King</a>.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8429092290/" title="E Skirt & shoes by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="E Skirt & shoes " height="424" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8216/8429092290_c9d49ef648.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
The shoe pattern - honestly I've been searching and can't find the link to the pattern I used. I will edit & add later if I find it. There are a variety of shoe patterns out there, and I've been a little nervous to give them a try. I will definitely embellish them more the next time around, and maybe plan the print of the fabric a little better. I didn't use leather, but considering they're baby shoes not made for a lot of hard core walking around, I'm not worried. The soles are made from the white grippy fabric in case she does need a little traction.<br />
The shoes were definitely fun and easy. I am looking for excuses to make more!Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15656774624409376051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3318830286307424759.post-2072024177375268272013-01-15T06:00:00.000-06:002013-02-08T14:10:15.250-06:00piper - three waysI just love the <a href="http://modkidboutique.com/Piper.html">Piper</a> dress pattern from Patty Young. The large pocket is perfect for little girl's treasures, the pleated skirt is fun, and the crossing straps in back are cute.<a href="http://modkidboutique.com/Piper.html"><br /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428003853/" title="Corduroy jumper - Oompa Loompa by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Corduroy jumper - Oompa Loompa" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8186/8428003853_84759e1121.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
<br />
I chose a bright striped corduroy, with plain turquoise for the pocket and pleats. My husband, the Willie Wonka fan, calls this the Oompa Loompa dress. It is pretty brightly colored, I'd have to agree. I used some sparkly ric rac on the pocket and sparkly buttons because my daughter LOVES sparkles!<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8429095434/" title="Oompa Loompa close-up by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Oompa Loompa close-up" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8323/8429095434_883616de9d.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
This is actually the first version I sewed. It was meant to be the one for my daughter, but it didn't quite fit her right. When I decided to make a sewing kit for my niece for Christmas, this dress seemed like the perfect choice for her. She loves green, and the flowers all have an edging to them that looks like handstitching. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8427999253/" title="Sew G dress by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Sew G dress" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8078/8427999253_0a87465661.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
<br />
The yellow flower buttons seemed just perfect with the corduroy fabric. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8427998785/" title="Sew G dress by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Sew G dress" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8221/8427998785_e755d703c2.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
This one was made for her little sister. I usually try and do similar styles of dresses for them, because I think matching your sister can be fun. I also try and do something floral for her because her middle name is "Rose". This corduroy fit the requirements. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428000613/" title="Miss L. Rose dress by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Miss L. Rose dress" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8506/8428000613_d8c13e29c8.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
<br />
It is definitely a different color scheme though, which sets her apart and doesn't make them matching twins. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8427999727/" title="Miss L. Rose dress by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Miss L. Rose dress" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8364/8427999727_2887344a26.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
Using corduroy with this pattern made it a little tight to do the pleats, so I look forward to trying it in some lighter weight fabric and springy print!Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15656774624409376051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3318830286307424759.post-14782705481389015302013-01-08T06:00:00.000-06:002013-02-08T14:18:24.533-06:00gretchen - two waysThis is a new favorite pattern. Patty Young's <a href="http://modkidboutique.com/Gretchen.html">Gretchen</a> dress has a lot of pieces, but I think it is just adorable! The side ties and huge pockets sold me.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428002257/" title="Red poppy dress by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Red poppy dress" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8332/8428002257_e9a0abebb0.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
<br />
I used Heidi Grace's red poppy fabric and picked out a coordinating red scalloped design. I used Patty Young ribbon for embellishment on the bodice.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8429094986/" title="Red poppy dress by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Red poppy dress" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8087/8429094986_1454b354c8.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
This version was for another niece for a Christmas present. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428001699/" title="Purple T dress by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Purple T dress" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8463/8428001699_f15dd0e8d0.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
<br />
The purple has gold polka dots, and the brown has a little shimmer to it as well. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8428001195/" title="Purple T dress - close up by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Purple T dress - close up" height="334" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8463/8428001195_c89ebf7486.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
My niece complained that the sleeves were too poofy. That wasn't a problem for my daughter, so obviously it's just personal preference. The dress pattern gives options for a short sleeve, which might work better for my niece. The skirt also has a bubble-style skirt option. That's not really my style, so I'll stick with the full swirly skirt for the next one I make!Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15656774624409376051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3318830286307424759.post-35222915861919113142012-10-31T06:00:00.000-05:002013-02-05T21:26:08.880-06:00HalloweenFor Halloween this year, we couldn't decide on something just right for all three. So - the two boys went together as Calvin and Hobbes.<br />
<br />
Here is Calvin. We put tons of gel and hairspray in his hair to spike it. The shirt was from Old Navy. Black pants were Target I think, and the red Converse we bought at Target.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8427996225/" title="Calvin & Hobbes by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Calvin & Hobbes" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8051/8427996225_e8824bee4f.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
<br />
I made Hobbes using a tutorial from <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Stuffed-Hobbes-with-pattern/#step1">Instructables</a>. Totally time intensive, but SO worth it. This plush will be cherished for a long time.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8429087280/" title="Hobbes by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Hobbes" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8075/8429087280_5d90356701.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />
<br />
Here are the boys checking out their story.<br />

<br />
<br />
Hobbes, meet Hobbes. Braden's costume was actually from Target, and I added the white fuzzy front. After I took the picture, it bugged me that his ears weren't black so I added that. I didn't change his feet, just left them the way they were. Not totally authentic or handmade, but it worked.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8429087720/" title="Hobbes, meet Hobbes by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="Hobbes, meet Hobbes" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8494/8429087720_a9276be5dd.jpg" width="415" /></a><br />
<br />
My dear daughter had a couple medical run-ins early in the summer, and became fascinated with nurses - thanks in part to a couple fabulous nurses. One of them had a sparkly headband, so that's why the headband is a part of the costume. I made the scrub top & pants. Fake Crocs from Target, stethoscope from Dad, RN pin from Grama J (an actual RN), and black bag from the church nursery dress-up box.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethethreadbeth/8427996933/" title="The nurse by be the thread, on Flickr"><img alt="The nurse" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8471/8427996933_20555098ab.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />

<br />
Yes - my mother did all this smocking on the bodice. Do you see the piping at the top and bottom? Cute little detail on an already beautiful dress. <br />

<br />
Another cute little detail - the waistband with buttons at the back. Check out the piping again on the Peter Pan collar and sleeves.<br />
