For the birthday party, I wanted the Very Lonely Firefly to be the bug getting most of the attention. However, there are 6 girls cousins and only my two boys - so the Very Hungry Caterpillar and butterfly had to make an appearance too!
The goody bags were from the Target dollar section... a long time ago.
Each kid got parts to make a mobile. The circles had each of the bugs from Eric Carle's books, as well as the star from "Draw Me a Star". I used my Silhouette to layout the pictures and cut them.
The treats were runts and gummy worms...
in a Target dollar section container.
Some other goodies in their bags - fork and spoon (Target dollar section), glow sticks, sparklers, bug jar, bug rings for the girls, and bug finger puppets.
The finger puppets, jar, and rings were from Oriental Trading Company.
The three babies got socks.
Here is what the finished mobile looked like.
We also made fireflies, using Mountain Dew bottles, glow sticks, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, and foam wings.
I used glue dots for the eyes and double stick tape to hold the wings on.
The pipe cleaner just got twisted around the top.
Since we planned on a picnic, I used some of my stickers on rocks to be decoration for outside as well as napkin holders if it was breezy.
The invites were simple. Green dotted washi tape (Target), a picture of the birthday boy in the grass, and some star and bug stickers.
The insides were made with washi tape, stickers, and a computer printout.
The weather was rainy, so the picnic food was served inside. The cake was a five layer yellow cake with dark blue frosting. It was covered in gold stars, and a yellow star candle, and a little yellow paper bunting spelling out Braden's name.
The birthday boy, his siblings, and cousins had a blast playing together anyway, and the grandparents, aunts and uncle enjoyed time with the kids. That's what really matters!

rainbow art party
The invites for the rainbow art party. The envelope was embellished with rainbow squiggles.
The outside of the invite reads "Follow every rainbow" and the front of the card is cut in a cloud shape.
The inside of the card had a rainbow ribbon and the birthday details.
At the party, each girl had a bag to hold her goodies. They got a rainbow necklace to make, rainbow crayons, rainbow beads and mobile parts, and rainbow pencils and notepads.
Each girl got to decorate her own little canvas and the goody bag with a variety of ribbons, strings, tickers, washi tape, and markers.
The birthday girl's cake was decorated with rainbow candles, and a mini M&M rainbow with marshmallow clouds.
The inside was a rainbow layer cake.
Happy Birthday, A!

Calvin & Hobbes party
A Calvin and Hobbes party with a snowman twist...perfect for my eight year old!
The friend party invitations were a simple orange card, with a hand colored (by my son) Hobbes glued on the front.
Inside were the party details(my identifying info is blurred out), complete with a gleeful Calvin enjoying a sled ride!
The family party invitations showed the family enjoying a special meal together.
Inside were the details for the family and the Calvin & Hobbes "party" shot.
On the party day, everyone was greeted at the door by Calvin's club sign - hand drawn by my son.
I made a banner for above the fireplace. Using a Calvin&Hobbes font, I printed my son's name in large orange letters, cut them out, and glued them to photocopied pages from the comic books. I used the page of Calvin & Hobbes dancing to music. The pages were cut in a pennant shape and then glued onto thin rope.
We used Styrofoam balls to make some of the famous snowmen. Puffy paint was the black buttons and eyes, the noses were made with Model Magic. The blue car is my daughter's Olivia car.
These snowmen were by the front door. Sled was made out of Legos by my son. The M&Ms were the hit of the party - especially for my daughter and nieces who were found in the closet holding handfuls. Little sneaks!
Conner made a poster with photocopies of some of his favorite comic strips. He did his best to replicate the font when he wrote the title on the top.
I made the goody bags out of tiger fabric, labels from the comic book strip, and twist tied them shut with pipe cleaners. Each bag had a bag of "Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs" (Cocoa Puffs), an orange gumball, a Calvinball mask (cut out of black fleece) and a colorful bouncy ball.
We weren't sure if it was going to snow, so we had to have a back up plan. We had a good amount of snow outside for the boys to play in, but Conner still wanted to make the mess inside. You can see we made newspaper hats for the boys, and then they made snowman jars. They used tiger felt for scarves, glued on noses made from Model Magic, glued on eyes from buttons, and used pipe cleaners for hair, tails, arms, or whatever else they could think of. The snow mess that went in the jar is shaving cream, cornstarch, and glitter. Thank you Pinterest. The boys said it was a little itchy, probably because of the glitter. I think it was really cool stuff. When they were done mixing it in disposable bowls, they put it in the jars, washed their hands off, and went outside to play in the real snow. That gave me time to clean up the table for treats!!
Here's a closeup of the snowman jar parts.
We also had a little photo booth set up for the boys. My husband turned the TV and made it like a monitor so they could see themselves. PERFECT activity for the boys to start off the party. We then watched all the pictures at the end of the party while they were having their treats.
After playing in the snow, they came in to have hot chocolate and cookies. I made melted snowman cookies and can not find the picture anywhere. I'll add it later if I find it. For now - check out the inspiration on Pinterest. Mine didn't have scarves, and the noses were orange TicTacs. I also had chocolate chip, butterscotch chip, white chocolate chip, and triple chocolate chip cookies. We also made "tiger tails" using pretzel rods drizzled with melted orange and brown chocolate.
The boys had a blast, and would definitely have enjoyed more time playing outside in the snow. It's our first significant snowfall of the season so they were eager to play! One of my favorite parts is that Conner was old enough to really help out with some of the details, and had definite ideas about how some of the activities should be set up. Most of all, he had fun. Happy birthday, Conner!

Olivia the Pig birthday party
My daughter LOVES Olivia the pig. We have read the books, watched the shows, played with the house & car & stuffed animals - it was only a matter of time before we celebrated with Olivia!
She definitely wanted to wear red for her birthday party to be "just like Olivia" - but I didn't want to go costume-y and have her be an exact replica. So she got her own special Olivia jumper.
The fabric on the bottom is that ruffle fabric everyone is raving about. I'm pretty sure I couldn't pull that off myself but I knew Abby would love it. The dress came together very quickly - I did a tube of matching red knit for the bodice, a tube of red (a little wider) for the skirt, and two pieces of red knit for the straps. The cutting and measuring probably took as long as the sewing - at most a total of 30 minutes to whip it together. She calls it her "jiggly" red dress and LOVES it.
The bows are red with white polka dots. Once again - not an exact replica of Olivia's bows, but perfect for her and for the party. I found red and white polka dot paper goods & balloons, so it was thematic.
Her goodie bags included red and white twisty erasers, notebooks and notepads with Olivia on them from the Target dollar bins, red and white polka dot pencils, tiaras and red and white striped hair bows for the girls, pirate patches and telescopes, pig noses, and pig ears. I made the hair bows, patches, pig noses, and ears. If I can get the kids to dress up I'll add pictures later. The patches were just black felt with skinny black elastic sewn on. The pig noses were pink felt with a large pink button on top to make the nose holes. For the ears, I sewed them up in felt and hot glued them to a pink headband. I made the ears quite oversized to be like Olivia's.
For the craft, I bought pink circular metal tins and hot glued a pink button in the middle to be the nose. The kids then added their own rhinestone stickers and glitter to make their very own piggy treasure boxes. I considered piggy banks, but it was too late to get the right containers together from our recycling stash, and I wasn't going to pay for brand new piggy banks to decorate. I think the boxes turned out cute, and it has been a great way for Abby to store the pig dress up parts (eye patch & nose).

playing catch up
For a variety of reasons I won't go into, I took a blogging break. But I've decided I would like to get back in the swing of things. It's nice to have a record of all my handmade goodies, and I like sharing them with you.
First of all - I made some new shirts using heat transfer. The front of the shirts have an H5 on the pocket spot. We are kind of geeky and like math problems around our house... can you solve this one?
Yep - baby #3 is due in late June. It's a boy. We've named him, but aren't telling. And yes - I've already embroidered his name on a blanket. I'm not superstitious in that way.
Conner turned 7 in February, and he really wanted a detective party. The invitations have his fingerprints on the outside of the card (as well as the outside of the envelope) and vinyl magnifying glasses with a clear plastic lens over a paper "TOP SECRET" headline.
Goodie bags were a detective kit - ID tag, disguise glasses, magnifying glass, flashlight they could decorate, and a little notebook & pen - all kept in a black box. They played a few games to "earn" the parts of their detective kit, and then ended with a scavenger hunt around the house to find the goodies for their ice cream sundaes.
"Kirstin's Skirt" - Olabelhe Designs - made last fall. Abby's hands were covering up the big bow in front, but I'm just glad she stood still and smiled.
Abby's first day of school outfit. Their are matching capri-length pants with a ruffle, you just can't quite see them under the skirt. Her hair was braided and put into two loops - with matching bows. I love Hobby Lobby fabrics with all their perfectly matching ribbons!
I love being in a good hand-me-down chain. I made this top for a friend's daughter, and it got passed back to me when she outgrew it. Yay for durable and handmade!
I know it's horribly out of order, but I'll post about Halloween costumes tomorrow and Abby's Olivia the Pig birthday party as well. As for Easter - I have no handmade goodies to share because honestly I was rushing and didn't measure well and by the time I was done with the dress I realized the bodice was way too big for her. I'm hoping she grows into it by her brother's baptism later this summer.
There were a few Christmas projects made for my nieces and a dress for my daughter that will go undocumented unless I can find those pictures somewhere. I just need to move forward and show you all the goodies I'm working on now! I have three quilts in progress, a purse for my mom, a couple spring dresses for Abby, and a couple baby things for our June firefly.
Thanks for sticking around - I'll see you again soon!

bunny party
Abby's 3rd birthday party was all about bunnies! The treats were on a bookshelf in our kitchen. There are some mossy bunnies from Pier One, a couple white wooden bunnies from Total Class Creative, the bunny cookies, some bunny-shaped SweetTarts, and pink bunnies I made from Wilton molds & chocolate melts.
I love tulips! They opened up even more throughout the party. We had some on the table too.
The kids hunted for an orange carrot outside, then came inside and opened it to find beads to make a bunny necklace.
A little rabbit food for our guests - a salad bar, a couple muffins to choose from, and a couple pre-made salads on the other side of the lettuce.
The birthday bunny and her brother and cousins!
